East Kilbride land sold to Copart UK Limited

East Kilbride land sold to leading used and salvaged car auctioneer, Copart UK Limited.

Copart UK Limited has purchased a 31-acre site at Kelvin Industrial Estate, East Kilbride, Scotland from Clowes Developments for an undisclosed sum.

Copart UK handle more than 400,000 vehicles every year. Many of the UK’s major insurance companies use Copart UK to handle vehicles collected from their customers, which include fleets, motor traders and finance companies, for salvage and re-marketing via its online auctions. The online retailer helps their customers or ‘members’ to find, bid and win vehicles they are looking for through their comprehensive online platform.

Their new East Kilbride operation centre is set to provide annual storage capacity for more than 49,000 vehicles which is expected to increase operational coverage for both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The Copart team will be preparing the site for trade over the next few months by landscaping the land to maximise vehicle storage space. The site will also house a purpose-built vehicle receiving area and office accommodation for staff.

Phil Briggs, director of operation centres, transport and engineering at Copart UK, said:

Alongside our existing 30-acre site in Whitburn, the East Kilbride operation centre offers the potential for Copart to handle around 100,000 cars per year across Scotland. We anticipate the facility will be up and running by the end of this year.

Gordon Arthur, Director at Clowes Developments commented:

It’s been a pleasure to work with Copart on this deal. We look forward to watching the company expand and develop their business at their new premises.

Colliers advised Clowes Developments on the transaction. Iain Davidson, Director of Industrial & Logistics at Colliers commented:

We are delighted to have secured a successful sale of this strategic site. From a personal perspective having previously sold the former Freescale Semiconductor and Jeyes factories that make up the site, it is now extremely satisfying to complete this transaction which will see the land brought back to operational use again.
